Rugby league history
Marrickville Oval, in Sydney's inner west, was one of several early home grounds used by the Newtown club (now the Newtown Jets) in the years before it settled permanently at Henson Park. Newtown's first home was Wentworth/Metters Park in Erskineville and Alexandria, before later moving to Erskineville Oval and then Marrickville Oval; Rugby League Project's results database shows first-grade NSWRFL fixtures at Marrickville Oval from at least 28 August 1920 (Newtown 17-2 University, reserve grade) through the 1920s. The club relocated definitively to Henson Park, its home ever since, in the 1930s. Marrickville Oval itself remains in use today as a suburban sporting ground but is no longer a rugby league premiership venue.
