Rugby league history
Mopsey Garth was the home ground of Normanton R.L.F.C. in the West Yorkshire town of Normanton (in the City of Wakefield), one of the founder members of the third division of the Yorkshire Senior Competition in 1893 and a Northern Union club from 1898–99. The club had a brief run of early success, finishing top of the Yorkshire Second Competition (Eastern Section) in 1899–1900 and beating Leeds in the first round of the Challenge Cup, before financial difficulties forced it to fold after the 1905–06 season (it finished 26th that year). A successor club, Hopetown F.C. — ancestor of today's Normanton Knights — later emerged. Rugby League Project's results archive shows Mopsey Garth continuing to host rugby league after the senior club's demise, with the amateur side Normanton St John's playing Challenge Cup qualifying ties there as late as 1912–13; the archive records 75 games at the ground in total between 1901 and 1913, across the Yorkshire Senior Competition, the Second Division, the Northern Rugby Football Union and the Challenge Cup.
