Rugby league history

Quay Meadow, on St George's Quay in Lancaster, was the home ground of Lancaster F.C. through the club's short life in the professional/semi-professional ranks of the Northern Union. Lancaster — a rugby club formed in 1870 — joined the Northern Union in 1897 alongside Morecambe Bay neighbours Barrow, Ulverston and Millom, turned semi-professional in the Lancashire Senior Competition in 1901-02, and spent three seasons in the Northern Union's Second Division before leaving the league at the end of the 1904-05 season; the club was dissolved shortly afterwards. Rugby League Project's results archive records 69 games at Quay Meadow across this period, including Challenge Cup and Second Division fixtures against clubs such as Wigan, Widnes, Leeds and Huddersfield, plus promotion/relegation playoffs — one of which, a Barrow vs Tyldesley playoff in 1899/1900, drew 6,000 spectators, the ground's largest recorded crowd.
