Rugby league history

Tolka Park in Drumcondra, Dublin, opened in 1924 as 'Richmond Road' before being renamed for the adjacent River Tolka, is primarily a football ground, the long-term home of Shelbourne FC since 1989. Rugby league's use was limited to Ireland national team internationals between 1998 and 2006, including three 2000 Rugby League World Cup fixtures -- among them a 30-16 win over New Zealand Maori that drew the venue's record crowd of 3,164. The ground hosted the first floodlit football match in the Republic of Ireland, on 30 March 1953.
