Club Background
There was no single continuous "Gold Coast" club before the Titans, but rather a sequence of short-lived entities: the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants (1988-89), admitted to the NSWRL alongside Brisbane and Newcastle and based at Seagulls Stadium in Tweed Heads West; the Gold Coast Seagulls (1990-95), bought and renamed by the Seagulls Leagues Club and briefly headlined by Wally Lewis's 1991 signing; a revoked 1996 "Gladiators" rebrand; and finally the Gold Coast Chargers (1996-98), reconstituted by the ARL after the rebrand was struck down.

Club history
There is no single continuous "Gold Coast" club predating the Titans — the region was represented by a sequence of distinct, differently named entities. The main line runs: Gold Coast-Tweed Giants (1988-89) → Gold Coast Seagulls (1990-95) → a brief, revoked "Gladiators" rebrand (1996) → Gold Coast Chargers (1996-98). The Giants were admitted to the NSWRL for 1988 alongside Brisbane and Newcastle, based at Seagulls Stadium in Tweed Heads West because Brisbane's licence gave it exclusive south-east Queensland rights.
In 1990 the Seagulls Leagues Club bought and renamed the franchise, and despite Wally Lewis's high-profile 1991 signing the team collected three straight wooden spoons before folding after 1995 amid Super League turmoil. A 1996 "Gladiators" rebrand by a developer was revoked by the ARL, which reconstituted the licence as the Gold Coast Chargers, making the finals only in 1997 before disbanding amid boardroom conflict in December 1998 — leaving the Gold Coast without top-flight rugby league until the Titans' 2007 entry, an entirely separate franchise (see the Gold Coast page).
