Seagulls Stadium

Tweed Heads (Tweed Heads West), New South Wales, Australia

Seagulls Stadium, Tweed Heads (Tweed Heads West), Australia — opened c.1972-75, 183 rugby league games hosted, home of None (defunct/demolished; historic home of Tweed Heads Seagulls, then the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants/Gold Coast Seagulls NSWRL/ARL franchise, 1988-1995).

Sourcing caveat: This Gollan Drive ground (defunct, demolished for housing in the late 1990s) is a genuinely different venue from Piggabeen Sports Complex/Seagulls Sports Complex, currently sponsored as Preston Building Sports Complex, on Carramar Drive in the same Tweed Heads West suburb - the Seagulls' current Queensland Cup home, built from land bought in December 1985 and in use as their ground since the late 1990s/2003. The two should not be conflated: this write-up covers only the older, now-demolished Gollan Drive ground that carried the 'Seagulls Stadium' name from 1990.

Rugby league history

On Gollan Drive in West Tweed Heads, this ground was originally Chris Cunningham Field, built and used by the local Tweed Heads Seagulls club from the early-to-mid 1970s (rugby league fixtures here are recorded from 1975, including tour matches against the Kiwis and Great Britain). It gained a wider profile as the home of the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants when they entered the NSWRL premiership in 1988, and was renamed Seagulls Stadium in 1990 when the Seagulls Leagues Club bought out the Giants franchise and rebranded it the Gold Coast Seagulls. The Seagulls finished with the wooden spoon in three straight seasons (1991-93) and, squeezed by the Super League war and financial trouble, folded after the 1995 season. Regarded as inferior to the nearby Carrara Stadium, the ground went unused, was sold by the Seagulls club in the late 1990s, and was eventually demolished for housing; its electronic scoreboard, grandstands and corporate boxes were bought by Wollongong Wolves soccer club in 2000 for reuse at a new stadium in Figtree.
