Club Background

The Illawarra Steelers were admitted to the New South Wales Rugby League on 13 December 1980 and took the field for the first time in 1982, their name chosen through a public competition honouring the region's Port Kembla steelworks. Playing in scarlet and white out of Wollongong Showground — later Steelers Stadium, now WIN Stadium — the club represented the Illawarra region for less than two decades before rugby league's post-Super League War rationalisation forced its hand: on 23 September 1998 Illawarra agreed to a joint venture with St George, forming the St George Illawarra Dragons from 1999 in the code's first such merger.

Club history

The Illawarra Steelers were admitted to the New South Wales Rugby League on 13 December 1980, when the NSWRL voted almost unanimously to grant the Wollongong region a top-flight licence, and the club took the field for the first time in the 1982 season. The name was chosen through a public competition — a nod both to the region's dominant employer, the Port Kembla steelworks, and to the entrant's own admitted fandom of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers. Illawarra played its home matches at Wollongong Showground (rebranded Steelers Stadium, now WIN Stadium), wearing scarlet and white.

Squeezed by rugby league's post-Super League War rationalisation, Illawarra entered a "joint venture" with the financially troubled but historically powerful St George Dragons, announced 23 September 1998, to form the St George Illawarra Dragons from 1999 — rugby league's first such merger. Many Steelers supporters experienced it as an effective takeover, since the new entity's branding leaned heavily on St George's dragon imagery and history, a sore point in Illawarra fan culture that persists in debates over the joint venture's balance of power to this day.
