Rugby league history
Prescott Street, off Frog Lane in Wigan, was the ground of Wigan Cricket Club and became rugby football's first home in the town when the newly renamed Wigan & District Football Club moved there for its inaugural match on 25 November 1876, beating St Helens. The original club disbanded in 1877; when it reformed as Wigan Wasps in 1879 it initially returned to its earlier Folly Field ground before moving back to Prescott Street around 1886. Wigan were founder members of the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895 and continued playing at Prescott Street through the code's split and into the Northern Union era, before becoming sub-tenants of Springfield Park in September 1901 and then moving into their own purpose-built Central Park in September 1902. Prescott Street is a genuinely distinct, smaller venue from both Central Park and its successor, the DW Stadium — it was never more than a shared cricket-ground tenancy, well before Wigan had a home of their own.
