Rugby league history

Wigan Warriors moved here from Central Park in 1999 and have made it one of Super League's flagship venues, winning multiple Grand Finals, World Club Challenges and Challenge Cups while based there, and the ground has hosted World Club Challenge fixtures plus Tri-Nations games in the mid-2000s. At the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, the stadium (branded DW Stadium at the time) hosted a quarter-final on 5 November 2022, England's 46–6 win over Papua New Guinea, in front of 23,179 fans — one of the tournament's best-attended games.

Also the long-time home of Wigan Athletic F.C. in football.
