Rugby league history

Leigh Sports Village became the new home of the club now known as Leigh Leopards (formerly Leigh Centurions), replacing their former Hilton Park ground, and opened with a 26-6 defeat to Salford on 28 December 2008 in front of a sell-out 4,714 crowd. The stadium has hosted two Challenge Cup semi-finals (Wigan v London Broncos, 27 July 2013; Castleford 28-6 Widnes, 11 August 2014 — a ground-record 12,005 crowd), England rugby league internationals, and was a venue at the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. It hosted three group matches at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup (played 2022): Wales 12-18 Cook Islands, Lebanon 32-14 Ireland, and Lebanon 74-12 Jamaica. The ground was renamed the Progress with Unity Stadium in 2025 under a new sponsorship deal.

The stadium has also been used for other sports, including as a venue for UEFA Women's Euro 2022 and as the regular home of Manchester United Women.
