Rugby league history
Well Street was the home ground of Tyldesley, a founder member of the Northern Rugby Football Union at the 1895 Great Schism. The club played five seasons of semi-professional rugby league there, from 1895–96 to 1899–1900, finishing 6th in its debut season and 3rd in 1896–97 before falling away to finish bottom of the league (14th of 14) in its final 1899–1900 campaign. Rugby League Project's results archive lists 73 matches at Well Street across the Northern Rugby Football Union, the Lancashire Senior Competition and the Challenge Cup (1896–97, 1897–98 and 1899–1900), with Tyldesley hosting sides including Wigan, St Helens, Leeds, Warrington and Widnes. Tyldesley disbanded at the end of the 1901–02 season under substantial financial liabilities; a reformed Tyldesley club joined the Rugby Football Union in 1911, switching codes to rugby union.
