Club Background

Founded in 1920 to represent the University of Sydney, University joined the NSWRL premiership and remained in the top grade for 18 seasons through to the end of 1937. The club's own Sports Association would not allow premiership training or matches on campus, so University trained with Eastern Suburbs and played its home games at the Sydney Sports Ground, drawing its playing squad from a small, transient student population.

Club history

University entered the NSWRL premiership in 1920, representing the University of Sydney, and competed continuously through to the end of the 1937 season — an 18-season span, extending well into the mid/late 1930s, not merely the 1920s. Despite the club's name, the University Sports Association would not allow premiership training or matches on campus grounds, so University instead trained with Eastern Suburbs and played its home fixtures at the Sydney Sports Ground.

On-field results were poor for almost the entire tenure: the club finished last in 12 of its 18 seasons, won only 44 of 226 games overall, and endured a 42-match losing streak from April 1934 to August 1936, still a competition record. Unable to remain competitive or financially viable as a first-grade club drawing on a small, transient student-age playing pool, University withdrew from the NSWRL premiership at the close of the 1937 season and did not return to top-flight competition.
