1928 NSWRFL Season
The 1928 regular season was reduced to 14 rounds (down from 18 in prior years), and clubs played uneven numbers of matches (12 or 13) within that reduced schedule. Eastern Suburbs and St. George finished level atop the table on 26 competition points each, but no play-off was staged to award a minor premiership. South Sydney, who had finished third with 18 points, won the finals series and defeated Eastern Suburbs 26-5 in the grand final at the Royal Agricultural Society Grounds on 7 September 1928. It was South Sydney's fourth consecutive premiership, making them the first club in the competition's history to achieve four titles in a row. North Sydney and University filled fourth and fifth with modest winning and near-even records respectively, while Glebe and Western Suburbs tied for sixth on 12 points, each with 4-0-8 records but differing significantly on points differential. Balmain finished eighth, and Newtown, managing only a single win from twelve matches, finished with the wooden spoon.
Sourcing caveat: Eastern Suburbs and St. George are both listed at ladder position 1, level on 26 competition points; sources agree no minor-premiership play-off was held to separate them, so both are shown at rank 1 with the next-ranked club (South Sydney) at position 3.
