1929 NSWRFL Season

The 1929 premiership was played across sixteen rounds with nine clubs, with roughly half the season affected by the absence of players selected for the 1929-30 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain, which departed for England midway through the year and stripped several clubs of their representative-grade forwards and backs for a run of matches. South Sydney were minor premiers on 31 points, finishing four points clear of second-placed St. George, and went on to win the grand final 30-10 over fourth-placed Newtown, leading 18-2 at halftime before a comfortable second-half margin. It was South Sydney's ninth premiership overall and fifth consecutive title, extending a dynasty that had begun in 1925 and would not be matched for consecutive titles again for decades. At the conclusion of the season Glebe, who finished eighth of nine, withdrew from the competition, citing the lack of a permanent home ground at Wentworth Park, a run of poor on-field results across the late 1920s, and an insufficient local population base in the inner-city district to sustain a first-grade club financially; despite holding a strong claim to being the code's very first club, formed in January 1908, Glebe did not return to the top grade after this season. University, who finished last on nine points, continued their run as one of the competition's least successful founding members of the 1920s era.
