1988-89 NBA Season Standings

The NBA expanded to 25 teams with the addition of the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat. Detroit (63-19) and New York (52-30) won the East's divisions, while the Lakers (57-25) and Utah (51-31) won the West's, each pair claiming the top two seeds in its conference. Detroit swept the injury-depleted Lakers 4-0 in the Finals for the franchise's first title, part of the 'Bad Boys' era.

Sourcing caveat: Contrary to a common assumption, the expansion Miami Heat played their inaugural 1988-89 season in the WESTERN Conference (Midwest Division), not the East; Charlotte Hornets were the Eastern Conference (Atlantic Division) expansion team. This is confirmed independently by Basketball-Reference, Wikipedia, and shrpsports.com. Rank order also reflects the division-winner-gets-top-two-seeds rule (Detroit/New York in the East, Lakers/Utah in the West) rather than pure win total.
