Wakefield Trinity 17-0 Hull FC — 1908/09 Challenge Cup Final

Headingley, Leeds · Attendance: 23,587

Data last verified: 11 August 2026.

1908/09 Challenge Cup Final: Wakefield Trinity 17-0 Hull FC, at Headingley, Leeds.

Sourcing caveat: Referee confirmed 10 Sep 2026 via this final's Wikipedia article, directly re-fetched by the assistant, closing a gap left open by an earlier pass (E. H. Smirke of Wigan). Goal-kickers still could not be confirmed from available sources. A research pass located seven Wakefield Trinity players via their own Wikipedia biographies, each independently confirming presence in this specific final and position: captain and stand-off Harry Slater, centre Billy Lynch, wing William Simpson (try), forward Nealy Crosland (try), and forwards Joseph Taylor, John Walton and Harry Beaumont. That leaves 6 of Wakefield Trinity's 13 places (fullback, one centre, one wing, scrum-half, two forwards) unidentified from any accessible source. On the Hull FC side, only one player could be identified the same way: forward Bill (William) Holder, via his own Wikipedia biography — the other 12 Hull places remain unconfirmed. No shirt numbers are given for any of these eight players (recorded as UNCONFIRMED) since squad numbering wasn't standard until the 1930s. Two of the player biographies state the match date as "20 April 1909" rather than the 24 April 1909 date given by the Challenge Cup Wikipedia article and the Wakefield Trinity club history page cited above and used elsewhere in this entry; this is treated as a minor discrepancy in the player-biography source (or an artefact of page summarisation) rather than grounds to doubt the well-corroborated 24 April date.

Match report

Wakefield Trinity won the Challenge Cup for the first time, beating Hull FC 17-0 at Headingley, Leeds on 24 April 1909. It was Hull's second consecutive final defeat without scoring a point (following 1908), and although the official attendance was recorded as 23,587, several contemporary commentators estimated the actual crowd closer to 30,000. The Rugby League Challenge Cup is rugby league's oldest and most prestigious knockout competition, first contested in 1896/97 under what was then the Northern Union. Its history has been interrupted only by the two World Wars, with four editions lost between 1915/16 and 1918/19 and one more in 1939/40; the finals played either side of those gaps, and during the Second World War itself, were sometimes contested as regional or two-legged fixtures under wartime emergency arrangements rather than the usual single showpiece match. For much of the competition's early history the final rotated around northern club and representative grounds such as Headingley, Fartown, Central Park and the Athletic Ground, Rochdale, before Wembley Stadium became the final's permanent home from 1928/29 onward (with a short break during Wembley's 2000-2007 reconstruction, when finals were staged at Murrayfield, Twickenham and the Millennium Stadium instead). This was the 13th Challenge Cup final played, and, under the name “Wakefield Trinity,” the 1st Challenge Cup title for the club. The result is recorded in this site's full results table alongside every other Challenge Cup final played since the competition's 1896/97 inception, cross-referenced against the venue and attendance figures gathered for that table. As with all of this site's rugby league match reports, any statistic that couldn't be confirmed from an accessible source — a scorer's name, an exact minute, a goal-kicking split — has been left out entirely rather than estimated, in line with the sourcing standard applied across the Challenge Cup, World Cup, World Club Challenge and domestic finals coverage on this site.
