Wests Tigers — 1 premiership on record (2005).

Club Background

Wests Tigers were formally established on 27 July 1999 as a joint venture between two exposed foundation-era NSWRL clubs, the Balmain Tigers (1908) and the Western Suburbs Magpies (1908), choosing to merge with each other rather than accept takeovers elsewhere and blending black-and-white with black-and-gold. They compete in the NRL, splitting home games between Balmain's spiritual Leichhardt Oval and Western Suburbs' Campbelltown Stadium since entering the competition in 2000.

Club history

Wests Tigers were formally established as a joint venture on 27 July 1999 between two founding-era NSWRL clubs left exposed by the same post-Super League War rationalisation that produced St George Illawarra: the Balmain Tigers (foundation club, 1908) and the Western Suburbs Magpies (foundation club, 1908). Rather than accept mergers they regarded as effective takeovers, Balmain and Wests chose each other, preserving both heritages in a single entity that began play in 2000, blending black-and-white with black-and-gold colours.

The new club split home games between Balmain's spiritual Leichhardt Oval and Western Suburbs' Campbelltown Stadium, an arrangement that has persisted with periodic revisions since. Remarkably, Wests Tigers' defining triumph came almost immediately: written off as a 150-1 outsider, the joint venture won the 2005 premiership in just its sixth season and first finals appearance, defeating North Queensland 30-16 in the grand final — a fairytale success rarely matched by any expansion or merged club so soon after formation.
