Final standings tables for the English rugby league top flight before Super League launched in 1996 — the Northern Rugby Football League/Rugby Football League Championship. Currently live: 82 seasons (1895-96 to 1995-96) — the complete table-position-only era of this competition (1973-74, when the old Championship knockout playoff was discontinued, through 1995-96, the last pre-Super-League season) plus 1906-07 through 1972-73, plus the competition's first six seasons, 1895-96 and 1901-02 through 1905-06 — with three gaps: 1896-97 through 1900-01 (no unified Championship — the competition split into two entirely separate, non-communicating Lancashire and Yorkshire county competitions with no cross-county final, the same kind of gap as 1918-19 below), 1915-16 through 1918-19 (the 1915-16 to 1917-18 seasons ran as reduced-scale, geographically-split Wartime Emergency Leagues decided purely on table position with no recognised overall champion, and 1918-19 split the same way as 1896-1901 above), and 1939-40 through 1944-45 (WWII, also no officially recognised Championship) — see the full Super League & British Champions list for why, season by season. Four distinct formats so far among the official seasons, oldest to newest: straight table position with no playoff at all in the competition's first six seasons (1895-96, then 1901-02 through 1905-06, the earliest ranked by win percentage since fixture counts varied by club); a top-4 knockout (2 Semi-Finals + Final, also win-percentage-ranked in its earliest seasons) from 1906-07 through 1961-62 (with the wartime gap); a brief table-only reversion across two divisions with no playoff at all in 1962-63 and 1963-64; then a 16-club single-elimination knockout (Round 1, Round 2, Semi-Final, Final) run continuously from 1964-65 through 1972-73, when it was dropped for outright table position. See also the full Super League & British Champions list, which covers every season back to 1895/96, including the 1896-97 to 1900-01 gap years above.
