Club history
The Newcastle Knights were admitted to the NSWRL premiership in 1988 as part of the league's national expansion, entering alongside Brisbane and the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants under inaugural coach Allan McMahon. Newcastle had actually been offered a licence for 1982 but declined it, fearing it would undermine the local Newcastle Rugby League competition; that slot went to Canberra instead. The "Knights" name and armour-clad emblem evoke the city's identity as a steel and coal-mining "Steel City." The club has played its home games throughout its history at the venue in Broadmeadow now known as McDonald Jones Stadium.
Newcastle's defining moment came in 1997, when a team built overwhelmingly from local juniors upset Manly 22-16 in the grand final, a victory that lifted a region reeling from the announced closure of the BHP steelworks, its largest employer. A second premiership followed in 2001, when Andrew Johns inspired a 30-24 upset of hot favourites Parramatta after building a 24-0 half-time lead — Johns went on to win three Dally M Medals as the club's greatest-ever player. After Johns's retirement, Newcastle endured a long premiership drought and repeated struggles, including a horror 2005 season with 13 straight losses and multiple wooden spoons (2005, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2025), before rebuilding around Origin-calibre talent such as Kalyn Ponga.
