Harry Sunderland Trophy

Chris Joynt (St Helens). Joynt won the Harry Sunderland Trophy after captaining St Helens to the title and scoring two tries.

Match context

St Helens beat Wigan Warriors 29-16 at Old Trafford, winning their second consecutive Super League Grand Final title. Wigan had finished top of the regular-season table but reached the decider via the Preliminary Final's second-chance route, after St Helens had already beaten them 54-16 in the Qualifying Semi-Final a fortnight earlier. Captain Chris Joynt's brace of tries, plus a Paul Sculthorpe field goal, secured the win. David Hodgson's try for Wigan, at 19 years 67 days, made him — at the time — the youngest player to score in a Super League Grand Final. Coaches: Ian Millward (St Helens), Frank Endacott (Wigan).
