Harry Sunderland Trophy
James Roby. Won the Harry Sunderland Trophy, Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match honour at the time. Some post-match debate over whether match-winner Jack Welsby deserved it more — reported honestly as a genuine discussion rather than smoothed over, including Roby's own comments agreeing Welsby "probably deserved" it.
Match context
St Helens beat Wigan Warriors 8-4 at a neutral KCOM Stadium in Hull — moved from the usual Old Trafford and played in front of no crowd because of COVID-19 restrictions — to win a 2nd consecutive Super League title, in one of the most disrupted seasons in the competition's history. It was the lowest-scoring first half in Grand Final history, 2-0 to St Helens at the break via a Lachlan Coote penalty goal. Jake Bibby's try put Wigan 4-2 ahead in the second half before Coote's second penalty goal levelled it 4-4; deep into stoppage time Tommy Makinson's drop-goal attempt struck the post and Jack Welsby pounced on the rebound to score the match-winning try. James Roby was named Man of the Match and won the Harry Sunderland Trophy in what was also his farewell game for St Helens; it was also the farewell match for Wigan's Sean O'Loughlin.
