Rob Burrow Award

Bevan French. Won the inaugural Rob Burrow Award, Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match honour, renamed this year from the Harry Sunderland Trophy in tribute to the late Leeds Rhinos great — presented by Rob Burrow's father, Geoff Burrow.

Match context

Wigan Warriors won a second successive Super League Grand Final, beating first-time finalists Hull Kingston Rovers 9-2 in front of 68,173 at Old Trafford — a tight, defensively dominant contest rather than a try-fest. Hull KR looked to have broken the deadlock inside ten minutes when Mikey Lewis crossed, but the try was disallowed for a Tyrone May knock-on in the build-up. The decisive moment came in the 22nd minute, when Bevan French scored Wigan's only try of the match, converted by Adam Keighran to make it 6-0. Right on the half-time hooter, Harry Smith slotted a field goal to push the lead to 7-0 at the break. Hull KR finally got on the scoreboard through a Mikey Lewis penalty goal in the 56th minute, but Wigan's defence held firm and a late Keighran penalty goal made it 9-2. The result completed a historic "quadruple" for Wigan — League Leaders' Shield, Challenge Cup, World Club Challenge and Grand Final all won in the same calendar year, the first time any club had done so in the Super League era — and was back-to-back Grand Final glory for head coach Matt Peet. For Hull KR, under coach Willie Peters, it was the club's first-ever Grand Final appearance; they returned twelve months later and beat Wigan 24-6 to win their own first title.
