Sourcing caveat: See the finals-series match report for this fixture for a fuller scoring breakdown and its own sourcing notes. Paul Wellens' squad number was corrected from 1 to 17 (29 Aug 2026), per St Helens' official 2014 preseason squad-number release and a same-season squad announcement, both independently confirming 17 — a likely mix-up with the generic "1 = starting fullback" assumption rather than a personnel or position error.

Harry Sunderland Trophy
James Roby (St Helens). Roby won the Harry Sunderland Trophy — Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match award, not renamed the Rob Burrow Award until 2024.
Match context
St Helens beat Wigan Warriors 14-6 at Old Trafford to win their first Super League title since 2006, in departing coach Nathan Brown's final match in charge. The match is remembered above all for an ugly incident in the 2nd minute: Wigan prop Ben Flower punched St Helens' Lance Hohaia in the face following a heavy tackle exchange, knocking him down, then delivered a second punch to Hohaia's face while he lay defenceless on the ground. Referee Phil Bentham sent Flower off immediately — the first, and to date only, red card shown in a Super League Grand Final — leaving Wigan to play the remaining 78 minutes with 12 men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Wigan led 6-2 at half-time through a Joe Burgess try, but St Helens' extra man told as the match wore on: tries from Sia Soliola and Tommy Makinson (the latter from a high kick, with around 12 minutes left) secured the win, with Mark Percival kicking 3 from 3 conversions. James Roby was named Man of the Match and won the Harry Sunderland Trophy. The RFL charged Flower with a Grade F offence — rugby league's most serious disciplinary tier — and an independent panel handed him a six-month ban, reported at the time as the longest in Super League history for an on-field incident, ruling him out until mid-April 2015 and covering Wigan's World Club Series fixture against the Brisbane Broncos. Hohaia was separately charged with a lesser, Grade B striking offence for hitting Flower with his forearm earlier in the same passage of play, and received a one-match ban after an early guilty plea. Hohaia retired from rugby league the following April, citing recurrent concussion symptoms, and publicly wished Flower well when he made his playing comeback that same month.
