Harry Sunderland Trophy

Blake Green (Wigan Warriors). Green won the Harry Sunderland Trophy — Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match award, not renamed the Rob Burrow Award until 2024 — despite playing through a facial cut sustained early in the game.

Match context

Wigan Warriors beat Warrington Wolves 30-16 at Old Trafford to win their first Super League title since 2010, completing a stirring second-half comeback. Warrington raced into a 16-2 lead inside 26 minutes through tries from Joel Monaghan, Simon Grix and Ben Westwood, and led 16-6 at half-time after Darrell Goulding's 40th-minute try for Wigan, set up by Sam Tomkins. Wigan then scored 28 unanswered points across the second half — tries from Michael McIlorum, Josh Charnley, Blake Green and a late Pat Richards try and conversion — to complete the turnaround. In just the 2nd minute, Warrington's Ben Westwood punched Green in the face; it went unseen by the officials at the time and produced no card during the match, but Westwood was cited afterward by the RFL, pleaded guilty and received a one-match ban — a lighter, off-field-only sanction unlike the following year's Ben Flower incident, which drew an immediate red card and a six-month ban. Green was named Man of the Match and won the Harry Sunderland Trophy. The win, combined with Wigan's earlier Challenge Cup victory over Hull FC, completed the first Super League/Challenge Cup "double" since St Helens in 2006, and was veteran winger Pat Richards' final match for the club after eight seasons, capped with a try.
