8 October 2016 · Old Trafford, Manchester

2016 Super League Grand Final result: Wigan Warriors def. Warrington Wolves, 12-6, at Old Trafford, Manchester on 8 October 2016.

Sourcing caveat: See the finals-series match report for this fixture for a fuller scoring breakdown and its own sourcing notes. This entry's Warrington lineup previously listed Kurt Gidley (squad number 1) at fullback and Stefan Ratchford (squad number 6) at stand-off; corrected (29 Aug 2026) to Ratchford at fullback and Gidley at stand-off, per Rugby League Project's own match page and Sky Sports' pre-match Grand Final preview ("[Ratchford] took the number one [fullback] spot from Matty Russell in Round 16"; "[Gidley and Wigan's George Williams] line up ... at stand-off") — the jersey numbers themselves (Gidley 1, Ratchford 6) were already correct and are unchanged.

Harry Sunderland Trophy

Liam Farrell. Won the Harry Sunderland Trophy, Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match honour at the time.

Match context

Wigan Warriors beat Warrington Wolves 12-6 in front of a capacity 70,202 crowd at Old Trafford, a rematch of the 2013 Grand Final — and the final match of Josh Charnley's rugby league career before he switched codes to rugby union. Warrington led 6-2 at half-time via a Declan Patton try and conversion, after an earlier Matty Smith penalty goal for Wigan, before Wigan scored twice through Oliver Gildart and Charnley — both unconverted — either side of a disallowed Ryan Atkins try for Warrington. A second Smith penalty goal in the 69th minute sealed it. Liam Farrell was named Man of the Match and won the Harry Sunderland Trophy.
