Harry Sunderland Trophy
Thomas Leuluai (Wigan Warriors). Leuluai won the Harry Sunderland Trophy — Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match award, not renamed the Rob Burrow Award until 2024.
Match context
Wigan Warriors beat St Helens 22-10 at Old Trafford to win their first Super League title since the Grand Final era began in 1998, ending Leeds Rhinos' three-year reign as champions and inflicting a fourth consecutive Grand Final defeat on St Helens. Wigan raced into a 16-6 half-time lead built on two early Martin Gleeson tries and a Darrell Goulding score, before star fullback and reigning Man of Steel Pat Richards was forced off with an Achilles tendon injury after converting Wigan's first two tries, disrupting their kicking game for the second half — replacement Mark Riddell landed a 57th-minute penalty. Sam Tomkins added a third-quarter try, and St Helens' Andrew Dixon and Francis Meli scored second-half tries either side of the hour, but the gap proved too great. It was a landmark night for veteran St Helens hooker Keiron Cunningham, who played the last of his 496 appearances for the club in this match — just weeks after scoring the final-ever try at St Helens' historic Knowsley Road ground — and for Michael Maguire, who won the Super League title in his first season as Wigan's head coach. Thomas Leuluai won the Harry Sunderland Trophy.
