Tournament context
Japan hosted the fifteenth World Championship across four cities — Sendai, Hiroshima, Hamamatsu, and Sapporo for group play, with the medal round in Saitama — from August 19 to September 3, 2006, the first edition to feature 24 teams since 1986. Spain went undefeated across all nine games, becoming only the second team in the tournament's history (after the USA in 1994) to run a full World Championship slate without a loss, and beat Greece 70-47 in the final to claim the country's first-ever World Championship title. Pau Gasol was named tournament MVP, becoming the first Spanish player to win the award, a milestone made more remarkable by the fact that Gasol had injured himself in the semifinal and still played through the final as Spain closed out its title. Greece's run to the final was itself a significant achievement for a program that had never previously reached a World Championship title game; led by a roster built around the country's strong domestic Euroleague pedigree, Greece's silver medal marked the high point, to that date, of the country's men's national-team history. The United States took bronze, beating Argentina 96-81 in the third-place game after having been eliminated by Greece in the semifinals, a result that, while not as jarring as the American program's 2002 collapse, still underscored the competitive gap that had opened between the USA's post-Dream-Team rosters and the sport's rising international programs through the mid-2000s. The tournament holds a genuinely unique distinction in the history of the World Cup/World Championship: it remains, as of the most recent editions, the only final in the event's history in which none of the sport's five most historically dominant national programs — Argentina, the United States, the Soviet Union/Russia, Brazil, or any Yugoslav-successor team — took part. Spain and Greece's meeting for gold represented a genuine changing of the guard, evidence that the tournament's traditional hierarchy, built around a handful of programs that had combined to win every previous title, no longer had a monopoly on reaching the championship game. For Spain specifically, the 2006 title capped a decade-plus of steady program-building that had produced increasingly strong results at EuroBasket and the Olympics through the 1990s and early 2000s, and it launched the country into a sustained run as one of the sport's dominant international powers over the following fifteen years, a run that would eventually produce a second World Cup title in 2019 and multiple Olympic medals, cementing Spain's status as one of the great non-American basketball nations of the modern era.
