Regal Trophy

Every champion of the Regal Trophy, a season-opening knockout cup open to all professional clubs, launched in 1971-72 as the Player's No.6 Trophy before switching sponsors to Regal (Imperial Tobacco) in 1989-90. An older and fully independent competition from the Championship Cup, 1895 Cup, and League 1 Cup, it was discontinued in 1996 when rugby league switched to summer scheduling and its tobacco sponsor withdrew.
