Sourcing caveat: Exact try-scoring minutes were not confirmed for any 2022 scorer beyond approximate match phase (first half / early second half / final minutes) and are omitted rather than guessed. Lineups added from Rugby League Project's match-page team sheets — squad numbers are non-sequential (e.g. Huddersfield's 21, 23, 25; Wigan's 1, 23, 28 — Jai Field at fullback wearing 23 and Bevan French on the wing wearing 1) confirming they are genuine shirt numbers, not a position-order renumbering.

Match report

Huddersfield, appearing in their first final since 2009, dominated the opening exchanges and led at half-time through tries from Rowan Leutele, Chris McQueen and Jermaine McGillvary. Wigan hit back after the break, with Jai Field's try levelling the tie, before a tense final quarter. With under four minutes remaining and the scores locked, a Harry Smith grubber/cross-field kick found Liam Marshall to dive in for the match-winning try, sending the Wigan support into raptures — the final was played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium rather than the usual Wembley venue. McQueen's all-action display in defeat still earned him the Lance Todd Trophy. It was Wigan's 20th Challenge Cup, extending their all-time record. The Challenge Cup, first contested in 1896/97, is rugby league's oldest and most prestigious knockout competition, interrupted only by the two World Wars (four editions lost between 1915/16 and 1918/19, and one more in 1939/40). The move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for 2022 was a rare break from Wembley's near-century-long status as the final's traditional home, necessitated by scheduling around the redeveloped Wembley's other commitments that summer, and the switch drew comment from fans used to the competition's usual London base. The win confirmed Wigan's status as the competition's most successful club by title count, a lead built up across more than a century of Wembley and pre-Wembley finals appearances dating back to the 1920s.
