1953 NSWRFL Grand Final

Saturday, 12 September 1953 · Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, New South Wales

1953 NSWRFL Grand Final result: South Sydney def. St. George, 31-12, at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, New South Wales on Saturday, 12 September 1953.

Sourcing caveat: This match was played under the old "right of challenge" system as "the Final" — because minor premiers South Sydney won it outright, no subsequent challenge Grand Final was needed, and this match is counted in premiership records as the 1953 Grand Final. In 1953 a try was worth 3 points and a goal 2 points; the scoring breakdown above reconciles exactly to 31-12 (South Sydney: 7 tries — Ian Moir x3, Frank Threlfo, Kevin Woolfe, Johnny Dougherty, Ernie Hammerton — x 3 = 21, plus Dougherty 4/4 and Churchill 1 goal = 10, totalling 31; St George: Merv Lees and Kevin Brown tries x 3 = 6, plus Noel Pidding 3/3 goals = 6, totalling 12). Martin Gallagher and Billy Wilson were both sent off for fighting in the second half — permanent dismissals, not sin bins (no sin-bin law existed in 1953). St George's coach was Norm Tipping, continuing in the role he would also hold for the club's first 11-peat premiership in 1956. Squad numbers could not be confirmed as genuine match-day numbers (the primary source's values ran up to 44, consistent with internal database identifiers) and have been omitted rather than guessed. Churchill's exact goal-attempt count could not be confirmed beyond his 1 successful kick. Exact try minutes could not be confirmed. No reserves are recorded for either side.

Match context

South Sydney's 1953 premiership was sealed in a decider that was, strictly speaking, 'the Final', the last time the old challenge structure settled a Sydney premiership before the guaranteed grand final era began in 1954. Souths again finished as minor premiers, which meant St. George faced a double hurdle: to lift the trophy the Dragons needed to beat South Sydney in the Final and then again in a challenge Grand Final, the same two-step path St. George themselves had famously completed in 1949, while a single victory would give Souths the title outright. Souths had survived an extraordinary semi-final, edging North Sydney 5-4, while St. George crushed Eastern Suburbs 25-7. The decider, at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday 12 September, drew 44,581. Clive Churchill opened the scoring with a ninth-minute penalty goal and orchestrated a dominant first half in which the Dragons squandered three try-scoring chances; winger Ian Moir crossed twice and Frank Threlfo once as Souths built a 15-0 half-time lead. St. George rallied briefly through a Noel Pidding penalty goal after the resumption, but the contest turned ugly when a player from each side was sent off for fighting, and thereafter South Sydney's hard men, captain-coach Jack Rayner and Denis Donoghue, took control of the middle. Four more tries followed, to Woolfe, Dougherty, Ernie Hammerton and Moir, completing his hat-trick, with Dougherty landing four goals and Churchill one. Late consolation tries to Merv Lees and Brown, and three goals in all from Pidding, only trimmed the margin to 31-12. Moir's treble and Churchill's all-round generalship were the individual highlights of a win built on forward supremacy. The result carried a generational subtext: only Pidding survived from the St. George side that had won the 1949 premiership, and the Dragons would not reach another decider until 1956, when their record eleven-year reign began. For South Sydney it was a third premiership in four seasons and confirmation of the Rayner-Churchill machine's durability. Because the minor premiers won, no challenge match was needed, and the 12 September Final is counted in the premiership records as the 1953 grand final.
