Club Background
Founded in 1908 as one of the New South Wales Rugby Football League's foundation clubs, North Sydney were initially known as "the Shoremen" as the only side from the north shore of Sydney Harbour, settling at North Sydney Oval — "Bear Park" — from 1910 and later taking the "Bears" nickname from a 1959 sponsorship deal. The Bears built a long, proud history as genuine premiership contenders through the twentieth century, but financial trouble in the late 1990s saw the club's licence merged into the Northern Eagles joint venture with Manly-Warringah at the close of 1999. That venture collapsed after 2002, permanently shutting North Sydney out of the NRL in one of the sport's most bitter administrative sagas.

Club history
North Sydney was one of the founding members of the New South Wales Rugby Football League in 1908, though as the only club drawn from the north side of Sydney Harbour, long before the Harbour Bridge connected the two shores, the side was initially known as "the Shoremen." The club struggled early to secure access to its intended home, with council obstruction delaying matters until 1910, when North Sydney Oval — "Bear Park" — finally became their regular ground. The "Bears" nickname dates to a commercial sponsorship arrangement with the Big Bear supermarket chain, most commonly dated to 1959.
North Sydney built a long, proud history as a genuine premiership contender across the twentieth century, but by the late 1990s the club was in serious financial difficulty. As part of the NRL's post-Super League War rationalisation, which forced the competition down to fourteen teams, North Sydney's licence was merged into a joint venture with Manly-Warringah to form the Northern Eagles, ending the Bears' run as an independent top-flight club at the close of the 1999 season. The joint venture collapsed after 2002, leaving North Sydney permanently shut out of the NRL — one of the sport's most bitter and controversial administrative decisions.
