Match context

Penrith Panthers claimed a second straight premiership with a 28-12 win over Parramatta Eels in the first-ever all-western Sydney NRL Grand Final, played before a home-town crowd split between two rival fan bases. Parramatta led at halftime after tries to Clinton Gutherson and Junior Paulo, having matched Penrith blow for blow through an opening period that saw Dylan Edwards and Stephen Crichton cross for the Panthers. But Ivan Cleary's men lifted after the break, running away with the contest through second-half tries to Brian To'o, Jarome Luai and a trademark Nathan Cleary dart from dummy-half. Penrith's forward pack, led by Isaah Yeo, gradually wore down a gallant Parramatta side that had broken a 34-year Grand Final drought simply by reaching the decider, while the Panthers' defensive line speed and superior completion rate proved decisive as fatigue set in. Fullback Dylan Edwards was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for a composed, try-scoring performance built on strong metres, sharp support play and reliable last-line defence. The win delivered Penrith's fourth premiership and, crucially, the club's first back-to-back titles in its history, cementing Cleary's group as the dominant force of the era, while for Parramatta it was a fifth Grand Final loss without a title since 1986. The 2022 triumph proved to be merely the opening chapter of an extraordinary Penrith dynasty that would go on to reshape the record books over the following two seasons.
