Clive Churchill Medal

Daly Cherry-Evans (Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles). The first Clive Churchill Medal winner from a losing side since 1993.

Match context

The Sydney Roosters won a thrilling 26-18 grand final over Manly-Warringah at ANZ Stadium on 6 October 2013, the first premiership decider between the two clubs in 41 years and a triumphant debut season for rookie coach Trent Robinson. Manly, chasing a third title in five seasons, started the stronger side and led 6-0 before winger Daniel Tupou hauled the Roosters level, setting up an 8-6 Sydney lead at halftime. The Sea Eagles roared back after the break, scoring twice in quick succession, including a penalty try to Jamie Lyon, to surge into an 18-8 lead and appear on course for the premiership. But the Roosters produced a stunning final quarter, scoring three unanswered tries through Aidan Guerra, Shaun Kenny-Dowall and a spectacular length-of-field individual effort from Michael Jennings to snatch the lead and ultimately win 26-18 with time still on the clock, silencing the Manly comeback. It was the Roosters' 13th premiership and made them the first club since St George Illawarra in 2010 to complete the club-championship double of minor premiership and grand final. Despite finishing on the losing side, Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for his creative influence throughout, becoming only the third player from a losing grand final team to win the award in its history.
