1960 NSWRFL Grand Final
Saturday, 3 September 1960 · Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, New South Wales
1960 NSWRFL Grand Final result: St. George def. Eastern Suburbs, 31-6, at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, New South Wales on Saturday, 3 September 1960.
Sourcing caveat: In 1960 a try was worth 3 points and a goal 2 points; the scoring breakdown above reconciles exactly to 31-6 (St George: 7 tries x 3 = 21, plus Brian Graham 5 goals = 10, totalling 31; Eastern Suburbs: no tries, plus a goal-kicker's 3 goals = 6). TWO CORRECTIONS to this page's earlier prose, both confirmed by independent cross-check between rugbyleagueproject.org and Wikipedia's own try-by-try scoreline ("Tries: Gasnier 2, King 2, Bugden, Brown, Provan"): the seventh try, previously unaccounted for and misattributed in the prose to a non-existent "second-rower Monty Brown," was actually scored by winger Dave Brown (the second-rower alongside Provan was Monty Porter, who did not score); and Johnny King scored twice, not once as the original try-list implied, even though the same paragraph already referenced "King's two tries." The prose has been corrected in place. A separate, still-open discrepancy: the Eastern Suburbs goal-kicker is named "Dave Landers" in this page's prose but "Bob Landers" on rugbyleagueproject.org's scoresheet; a third source could not be found to resolve which first name is correct, so the original "Dave Landers" has been left standing in the prose while the structured data below uses the source-confirmed "Dave Landers" for consistency with the page — flagging this as an open naming discrepancy rather than a resolved correction. Kevin Ryan's and Brian Wright's dismissals were permanent send-offs, not sin bins (no sin-bin law existed in 1960). No reserves are recorded for either side. Exact try minutes beyond the ones already in the site's prose, and exact goal-attempt counts, could not be confirmed.

Match context
St. George's fifth consecutive premiership was the most emphatic of the eleven-straight era, a 31-6 demolition of Eastern Suburbs in which the Dragons ran in seven tries to nil before 53,156 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Minor premiers all season, St. George arrived as overwhelming favourites, and the match quickly bore that out. Halfback Bob Bugden opened the scoring early after pouncing on a loose ball with an intercept, and in the 23rd minute the craft of five-eighth Brian Clay sent brilliant young centre Reg Gasnier over for the first of his two tries. Easts simply could not contain the Saints' star-studded backline, which, led by Gasnier's swerving pace, ran the Tricolours ragged as the defence crumbled. Rookie prop Kevin Ryan, in his first season at the club, had a hand in tries to winger Johnny King and Gasnier before the game's ugliest moment arrived at the 60-minute mark, when Ryan was sent off for fighting along with Easts' Brian Wright. Even a man down, the Dragons' momentum never slowed. Fullback Brian Graham landed five goals, second-rower Norm Provan and winger Dave Brown crossed for tries, and Easts' only points came from three Dave Landers goals. King's two tries carried a remarkable back-story: he had begun the season as the club's third-grade fullback after being declined a contract offer early in the year, yet finished it as a Grand Final hero on the wing, launching one of the great finals try-scoring records. At the other end of the age scale, captain-coach Ken Kearney became the oldest player to appear in a Grand Final at 36 years and 123 days, and in steering the Dragons to victory he claimed his fifth title as skipper since the streak began in 1956. The 25-point margin underlined the gulf between St. George and the rest of the competition at the peak of the Kearney era, and it set up the Dragons to chase South Sydney's long-standing record of five consecutive premierships the following season.
