Club Background
Founded in February 1921 at the Kogarah School of Arts, St. George joined the NSWRL after the dissolution of Annandale created a vacancy, taking its name from the local municipality and its "Red V" jersey from the dragon-slaying legend of the patron saint. Kogarah Oval became the club's spiritual home from 1950, and financial and on-field struggles eventually led the standalone club toward its 1999 joint venture with Illawarra.

Club history
The St. George District Rugby League Football Club was founded in February 1921 at the Kogarah School of Arts, admitted to the NSWRL after a formal petition made room by the dissolution of the Annandale club. The club took its name from the historic municipality of St George, and its emblem — a red dragon on a white shield, worn on the famous "Red V" jersey — nodded to the patron saint's dragon-slaying legend. The club's spiritual home was Kogarah Oval from 1950.
St George's defining chapter is its 1956-1966 run of eleven consecutive premierships — still regarded as the single most dominant sustained era in rugby league history. Built under coach/captain Norm Provan and a tight-knit "family club" culture, the era featured legends such as Reg Gasnier, Johnny Raper, and Graeme Langlands. The 1959 side conceded just 90 points across the season while scoring 550. St George remained a powerhouse into the 1970s (grand finals in 1977, 1978, 1979) before financial and on-field struggles led it toward the 1999 joint venture with Illawarra.
