Match context

Melbourne Storm defeated Canterbury-Bankstown 14-4 at ANZ Stadium on 30 September 2012 in front of 82,976 fans, a record post-redevelopment grand final crowd overwhelmingly barracking for the Bulldogs. The win delivered the Storm their first legitimate premiership since their 2007 and 2009 titles were stripped for salary cap breaches, a redemption story four years in the making. Melbourne struck early through Ryan Hoffman in the seventh minute, and Canterbury hit back through Sam Perrett, who pounced on a grubber kick in the 25th minute to level scores at 4-4, in a passage of play that sparked a heated all-in brawl. The Storm then took over: fullback Billy Slater scored off a Cooper Cronk assist in the 32nd minute, and Justin O'Neill crossed from a Cronk cross-field kick in the 39th, sending Melbourne into the break 14-4 ahead. The second half produced no further points at all, the first scoreless second stanza in grand final history, as Melbourne's defence smothered every Bulldogs attacking raid. The contest was also marred by controversy: Bulldogs prop James Graham was found to have bitten Storm fullback Billy Slater's ear during the first-half brawl, drawing a lengthy suspension. Amid the chaos, halfback Cooper Cronk was the calm at the centre of the storm, pulling the strings with a delicate no-look assist for Slater and a precision cross-field kick for O'Neill, earning him the Clive Churchill Medal for an ice-cool, complete performance that confirmed Melbourne's status as the era's most ruthless premiership operators.
