Clive Churchill Medal

Sam Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs). Played the entire match despite fracturing his cheekbone/eye socket in the opening tackle.

Match context

In one of the most emotional deciders in NRL history, South Sydney ended a 43-year premiership drought — their first title since 1971, and a stunning turnaround for a club that had been expelled from the competition in 2000 before being readmitted in 2002 — with a commanding 30-6 win over Canterbury-Bankstown at ANZ Stadium in front of 83,833 fans. The story of the match was written in its opening seconds: prop-forward Sam Burgess fractured his cheekbone and eye socket in a heavy collision with Canterbury's James Graham on the very first tackle of the game, yet refused to leave the field, playing all 80 minutes through visible pain and swelling. His courage set the tone for a dominant Rabbitohs performance built on ferocious defence and clinical finishing. South Sydney led 6-0 at half-time before pulling away after the break, with tries to Alex Johnston, George Burgess, Kirisome Auva'a, halfback Adam Reynolds and superstar fullback Greg Inglis sealing the rout, with Canterbury's only response coming through Tony Williams. Burgess capped his extraordinary display by being awarded the Clive Churchill Medal as man of the match, an honour made all the more remarkable given the injury he carried throughout, though he required immediate surgery on his face the following day. The win, delivered under coach Michael Maguire, sparked scenes of jubilation across Redfern and the Souths heartland, closing the book on more than four decades of heartbreak since the club's previous premiership.
