Clive Churchill Medal

The Clive Churchill Medal was first awarded in 1986; no official best-on-ground medal existed for this Grand Final.

Match context

The 1984 decider was a Grand Final of brutal attrition that ended an empire. Parramatta, three-time defending premiers now coached by John Monie after Jack Gibson's departure, met a Canterbury-Bankstown side transformed by new coach Warren Ryan, whose ruthlessly drilled, gang-tackling defensive system, executed by hard men such as Peter Tunks, Peter Kelly and Mark Bugden, had made the Bulldogs the meanest defensive unit in the competition. Before 47,076 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the two heavyweights produced one of the lowest-scoring Grand Finals ever played. Parramatta struck the only blow of the first half when centre Mick Cronin crossed for an unconverted try, and the champions took a 4-0 lead into the break. But Ryan's men strangled the famous Eels backline of Sterling, Kenny, Cronin and Grothe all afternoon, and in the second half came the game's decisive, and most debated, moment. With Parramatta's inspirational lock Ray Price down injured, hooker Mark Bugden darted from dummy-half straight through the channel Price would have been defending and crashed over; Chris Mortimer's conversion made it 6-4. Cronin, so often Parramatta's match-winner, could not add to the total, missing both his shots at goal, and Canterbury's defence held firm to the siren to complete a 6-4 triumph. Press reports rated prop Peter Kelly the man of the match for his ferocious work in the middle. Captained by halfback Steve Mortimer, Canterbury claimed the club's fourth premiership and their second of the decade after 1980, denying Parramatta what would have been an unprecedented modern-era fourth consecutive title. The result confirmed Ryan, who had taken Newtown to the 1981 decider, as the game's new tactical master, and his defence-first Bulldogs, soon nicknamed the 'Dogs of War', would contest the next two Grand Finals as well, winning again in 1985. For Parramatta, the two-point loss closed their dynasty, though the great side would summon one final premiership against the same opponent in 1986.
