Clive Churchill Medal

Billy Slater (Melbourne Storm). His second Clive Churchill Medal.

Match context

Melbourne Storm produced one of the most one-sided performances in NRL Grand Final history, thrashing North Queensland Cowboys 34-6 at ANZ Stadium to claim their third premiership. The contest was effectively over by half-time, with the Storm racing to an 18-0 lead built on structured, clinical football orchestrated by halfback Cooper Cronk and captain Cameron Smith. North Queensland's afternoon worsened in just the third minute when forward Shaun Fensom suffered a serious leg injury in an accidental collision with a teammate, further hampering a Cowboys side already missing key troops. Melbourne's attack flowed through electric winger Josh Addo-Carr, who scored twice, while Will Chambers, Felise Kaufusi, Dale Finucane and Curtis Scott also crossed to complete a rout described by media as among the most lopsided deciders of the modern era. Fullback Billy Slater was instrumental throughout, using his trademark support play and reading of the game to set up Kaufusi's try before scoring one of his own in the second half, capping an outstanding all-round display that earned him his second career Clive Churchill Medal. North Queensland's only points came through Te Maire Martin. The win marked the first grand final contested without either the Brisbane Broncos or a Sydney-based club, and represented a fitting send-off for Cronk, who departed the club for Sydney Roosters immediately after the match, alongside veterans Slater and Smith closing out a golden era for the Storm.
