Match context

St George Illawarra's 32-8 demolition of the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium on 3 October 2010, in front of 82,334 fans, delivered the joint-venture club's first premiership since its 1999 formation and ended a St George drought stretching back to 1979. The match began tightly in greasy conditions: Mark Gasnier claimed an early Jamie Soward bomb inside six minutes to put the Dragons ahead, but the Roosters hit back through Braith Anasta and Mitchell Aubusson either side of the quarter-hour mark to snatch an 8-6 lead at the break, capping a spirited opening 40 minutes for the minor premiers. The second half told a completely different story: St George Illawarra scored 26 unanswered points, blowing the contest apart with a Jason Nightingale double either side of the hour mark, a Dean Young try created by dummy-half specialist Nathan Fien, and a late Fien try of his own that put an emphatic gloss on the scoreline. Jamie Soward was flawless off the tee, landing six of seven conversions. Fullback Darius Boyd was the man of the moment, weaving through the Roosters' outside backs to set up one of Nightingale's tries and finishing with strong metres in a display that earned him the Clive Churchill Medal. The result confirmed St George Illawarra as the dominant team of 2010 and gave the joint venture, and the long-suffering red-and-white faithful, their long-awaited maiden title.
