Club Background
Western Suburbs is one of rugby league's oldest clubs, founded on 4 February 1908 at a meeting at Ashfield Town Hall as one of the nine foundation members of the inaugural NSWRL premiership. Early players were dubbed the "Cherry Pickers" after the orchards around Ashfield before the "Magpies" name and black-and-white colours were adopted in 1928, with the club moving through St Luke's Park, Pratten Park and Lidcombe Oval before settling at Campbelltown Stadium from 1987. Weakened by the Super League war, Wests agreed on 27 July 1999 to a 50-50 joint venture with the Balmain Tigers, folding into the newly formed Wests Tigers for the 2000 season.

Club history
Western Suburbs is one of rugby league's oldest clubs, founded at a meeting at Ashfield Town Hall on 4 February 1908 as one of the nine foundation members of the inaugural NSWRL premiership. In the club's earliest years players were known informally as the "Cherry Pickers," a reference to the orchards then common around Ashfield; the "Magpies" name was formally adopted in 1928 and has stuck ever since, worn with black-and-white colours. Wests moved through several home grounds — St Luke's Park, Pratten Park, Lidcombe Oval — before relocating to Campbelltown Stadium from 1987.
By the late 1990s, weakened financially and competitively by the Super League war and the push to shrink the national competition, Wests agreed on 27 July 1999 to a 50-50 joint venture with the Balmain Tigers, another struggling inner-city foundation club. The merged Wests Tigers entered the competition in 2000, folding two of rugby league's most storied but financially embattled clubs into a single entity that preserved both heritages rather than seeing either disappear outright.
