Match report
Hull FC retained the Challenge Cup, beating great rivals Wigan 18-14 with Mahe Fonua's double proving decisive. Hull led at half-time and held on through a tense second half as Wigan, inspired by tries from John Bateman and Joe Burgess, pushed hard for an equaliser that never came. Marc Sneyd's reliable boot provided the underlying points advantage, while George Williams struggled to convert for Wigan, a key swing factor in a tight contest. Sneyd's man-of-the-match display, capping a dominant cup run that included a 62-0 semi-final thrashing of Catalans Dragons, made him one of only a handful of players to win consecutive Lance Todd Trophies. The match, played before a crowd that was the smallest of the "new" Wembley era to that point, was validation of coach Lee Radford's rebuild at Hull, and a fourth Challenge Cup final defeat to Hull for Wigan in the fixture's history. The Challenge Cup is rugby league's oldest and most prestigious knockout competition, first contested in 1896/97; only the two World Wars have interrupted its history, with four editions lost between 1915/16 and 1918/19 and a further one in 1939/40. Wembley Stadium has been the final's traditional home since 1929 (with a spell at Twickenham and the Millennium Stadium while the new Wembley was rebuilt between 2000 and 2006), and this was Hull FC's sixth Wembley final appearance, extending one of the competition's most storied rivalries with Wigan, a fixture that has produced some of the Cup final's biggest crowds since the showpiece game first moved south to London in the 1920s.
