Bradford Bulls 24-18 Leeds Rhinos — 2000 Challenge Cup Final
Murrayfield, Edinburgh · Attendance: 67,247
Data last verified: 11 August 2026.
2000 Challenge Cup Final: Bradford Bulls 24-18 Leeds Rhinos, at Murrayfield, Edinburgh.
Sourcing caveat: Try-scoring minutes and the complete try-scorer lists (beyond the named top scorers) could not be confirmed for either team and are omitted. This final tripped the "position-order" pitfall: Rugby League Project's team-sheet page for this match encodes only a 1-17 slot order rather than printed squad numbers (confirmed on a targeted per-team re-fetch, which stated so explicitly). For Bradford, real squad numbers were recovered by cross-referencing the Bulls' 2000-season squad list on Wikipedia, which matches this team-sheet's names and positions closely enough to confirm the same individual numbering scheme was in force for the final. Leeds' equivalent season-squad source could not be located at the time, so Leeds' shirt numbers were originally marked UNCONFIRMED throughout; player names and playing positions for Leeds were taken from the team-sheet source and were not in doubt. On a later pass, 12 of Leeds' 13 starting shirt numbers and all 4 bench numbers were resolved by cross-referencing this site's own Super League data (data/super_league_finals_reports.py), which has independently-sourced, non-position-order Leeds Rhinos lineups from finals-series matches within the same 2000 season (an Elimination Final and Elimination Semi-Final both played in September 2000, under the same coach, Dean Lance, as this Challenge Cup final) — those matches gave Iestyn Harris 1, Richie Blackmore 3, Keith Senior 4, Francis Cummins 5, Daryl Powell 6, Ryan Sheridan 7, Darren Fleary 8, Barrie McDermott 10, Adrian Morley 11, Anthony Farrell 17, Andy Hay 16, and interchange players Lee Jackson 9 and David Barnhill 12, all cross-checked as stable across multiple 2000-season appearances. Leroy Rivett (22) and Marcus St Hilaire (14) were not in either of those specific September 2000 lineups, so their numbers are instead carried over from adjacent-season (1998-99) Leeds finals-series and Grand Final appearances in the same site data, where both numbers recur consistently across multiple matches — a slightly weaker cross-reference than the same-season matches above, but a squad number changing between one first-team season and the next for a settled Leeds regular was rare in this era, so it is included with this caveat rather than left unconfirmed. Dean Lawford's number could not be cross-referenced (he does not appear anywhere in this site's Super League backlog) and remains UNCONFIRMED.

Match report
With the old Wembley Stadium being demolished for redevelopment, the 2000 final was the first to be staged away from Wembley in the Super League era, played at Murrayfield in Edinburgh in front of 67,247. Bradford Bulls built a commanding 14-2 half-time lead over local rivals Leeds Rhinos and held on for a 24-18 win, with Michael Withers scoring twice and Henry Paul controlling the game with the boot and in general play to claim the Lance Todd Trophy. The match confirmed Bradford's status as the dominant northern club of the period, having already won the Super League title, and began a run of Challenge Cup finals played at rotating neutral UK venues (Murrayfield, Twickenham, and the Millennium Stadium) that lasted until Wembley reopened in 2007. Since Super League's 1996 launch, the Challenge Cup has continued to sit alongside the league championship as one of English rugby league's two most prestigious domestic honours, with the final remaining a fixture at Wembley Stadium (barring occasional relocations) and continuing to draw some of the largest single-match crowds anywhere in the sport. Since 1946/47, the competition's individual award, the Lance Todd Trophy, has been presented to the final's outstanding player, voted for by a panel of media representatives at the final whistle — on several notable occasions the trophy has gone to a player on the losing side, an unusual honour that reflects the award's focus on individual performance rather than simply reflecting the final scoreline. This was the 99th Challenge Cup final played, and, under the name “Bradford Bulls,” the 1st Challenge Cup title for the club.
