1908 NSWRFL Season
The inaugural NSWRFL premiership began on 20 April 1908 with eight founding clubs: Balmain, Eastern Suburbs, Glebe, Newcastle, Newtown, North Sydney, South Sydney, and Western Suburbs. A ninth club, Cumberland, was admitted mid-competition after Round 1 had already started, playing only 8 games to the other clubs' 9; this late, irregular entry caused long-debated inconsistencies in bye allocations, and sources disagree on Cumberland's exact competition-points total (4 vs 6 points recorded across surveyed sources) — the figure used here is 4 points (wooden spoon). Cumberland folded after this single season and never competed again. South Sydney and Eastern Suburbs finished level on 18 competition points; South Sydney is treated as minor premiers on superior points differential (+141 vs +93), consistent with usual tie-break convention, though one source's table ordering placed Eastern Suburbs above them. South Sydney went on to win the first premiership, defeating Eastern Suburbs 14-12 in the Grand Final on 29 August 1908 at the Agricultural Society's Ground (crowd approx. 4,000); both finalists were weakened by players away on the first Kangaroo tour of Great Britain. Note: the 'Newcastle' club fielded in the 1908 and 1909 seasons was an early Newcastle-district foundation club and is an entirely separate, unrelated entity from the modern Newcastle Knights franchise that joined the competition in 1988; it is labelled 'Newcastle (1908-1909)' here to prevent it being conflated with the Knights.
Sourcing caveat: Cumberland's competition points (4 vs 6) and its final ladder placement are disputed across sources due to uneven bye allocations from its mid-season entry; the lower, wooden-spoon figure (4 points) is used here.
