1914 NSWRFL Season

The same eight clubs contested a season that ran from 22 May to 22 August, punctuated by exhibition matches against the touring 1914 Great Britain Lions; despite the outbreak of World War I in Europe in August 1914, there is no evidence the war disrupted this season's fixtures. No Grand Final was held under the era's automatic-premiership rule: South Sydney finished outright top with 23 competition points, one clear of Newtown, to claim their third premiership. Balmain's unusually high four-draw tally (6-4-4) left them third, just ahead of a congested mid-table featuring Eastern Suburbs and Glebe. At the bottom, Western Suburbs and Annandale filled the last two positions, with Annandale managing only a single win and a single draw across the fourteen-round season, a preview of the struggles that would define the club's remaining years in the competition before its withdrawal in 1920. South Sydney's third premiership came in a season played out entirely before the outbreak of the war in Europe was felt in Australia; the competition's leadership had no cause at the time to anticipate the disruption the conflict would bring to civic and sporting life over the following four years, though as it transpired the NSWRFL premiership itself continued to run every season without interruption throughout.
