1910 NSWRFL Season

Newcastle withdrew from the competition and was replaced by Annandale, keeping the field at eight clubs: Annandale, Balmain, Eastern Suburbs, Glebe, Newtown, North Sydney, South Sydney and Western Suburbs, now playing a 14-round home-and-away season. Newtown finished minor premiers, one competition point clear of South Sydney, and under the rules introduced this season the two leading clubs met in a season-ending Final that itself carried premiership points. That decider, at the RAS Showground before roughly 14,000-15,000 spectators, ended in a 4-4 draw: South Sydney led 4-2 with seconds remaining before Newtown captain Charles 'Boxer' Russell kicked a long-range goal from a fair mark to level the scores at the bell. No replay was required: the draw left Newtown a point clear on the ladder (23-22), and the minor premiers were declared premiers, the only Sydney premiership ever secured by a drawn decider. South Sydney set a club record with a 67-0 win over Western Suburbs on 23 July, still among their biggest premiership wins. Annandale's Norman brothers became one of the first sets of four brothers to play in the same NSWRFL side.

Sourcing caveat: Some secondary listings give the 1910 decider as a 6-4 Newtown win; both Wikipedia's match account and Rugby League Project's results table record a 4-4 draw with no replay, Newtown taking the premiership on ladder position. The drawn-decider version is used here.
