Warrington Wolves 18-4 St Helens — 2019 Challenge Cup Final

Wembley Stadium, London · Attendance: 62,717

Data last verified: 11 August 2026.

2019 Challenge Cup Final: Warrington Wolves 18-4 St Helens, at Wembley Stadium, London.

Sourcing caveat: St Helens' sole goal-kick attempt (Lachlan Coote) missed, so no St Helens goals are recorded. Lineups added from Rugby League Project's match-page team sheets — squad numbers are non-sequential (e.g. Warrington's 15, 18, 19, 22, 23; St Helens' 17, 20, 23) confirming they are genuine shirt numbers, not a position-order renumbering.

Match report

Warrington claimed a first Challenge Cup since 2012, upsetting a St Helens side that had lost only three league games all season. Joe Philbin capitalised on a Saints knock-on to open the scoring, and Ben Murdoch-Masila's try before the break put Warrington 12-0 up at half-time, a lead built on discipline and Stefan Ratchford's reliable kicking. St Helens improved after the break and got a try back through Théo Fages, but had two further tries controversially disallowed, including one effort that replays suggested had grounded. Hooker Daryl Clark, excellent all game in a fierce battle of the two rival heartland clubs, sealed victory with a try seven minutes from time and was a deserved Lance Todd Trophy winner. It completed a fourth-time-lucky story for Warrington against Saints in 2019 after three earlier Super League defeats to them that season, and denied St Helens what would have been a first Cup win since 2008. The Challenge Cup, first contested in 1896/97, is rugby league's oldest knockout competition and has been played every year since bar the wartime gaps of 1915/16-1918/19 and 1939/40. Wembley Stadium has hosted the final in its modern rebuilt form since 2007, after a six-year spell at the Millennium Stadium and Twickenham while the new Wembley was under construction, and this 2019 final continued a long-running heartland rivalry between the two Cheshire and Merseyside clubs that dates back over a century.
