Harry Sunderland Trophy

Rob Burrow (Leeds Rhinos). Burrow won the Harry Sunderland Trophy — Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match award, not renamed the Rob Burrow Award until 2024, in tribute to Burrow himself.

Match context

Leeds Rhinos beat St Helens 33-6 at Old Trafford — the first of three consecutive Super League Grand Final wins for Leeds (2007-2009, the last of which is already documented on this site). St Helens arrived undefeated in Grand Finals (four wins: 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006) and as League Leaders' Shield winners, while Leon Pryce made a record seventh Grand Final appearance. The match was tight at half-time (8-6 to Leeds) after Brent Webb and James Roby traded early tries and a Kevin Sinfield penalty edged the Rhinos ahead. Leeds then produced a devastating second-half performance, scoring four unanswered tries — Ali Lauitiiti's corner try, Scott Donald's 60-metre break, Lee Smith's corner try, and Jamie Jones-Buchanan finishing off a Clinton Toopi break — to win going away in what the club described as its largest Grand Final winning margin since 2001. Rob Burrow won the Harry Sunderland Trophy for Man of the Match. Pre-match entertainment was affected when singer Katherine Jenkins withdrew due to illness, with Russell Watson performing the pre-match hymn in her place.
