Harry Sunderland Trophy

Kevin Sinfield (Leeds Rhinos). Sinfield won the Harry Sunderland Trophy — Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match award, not renamed the Rob Burrow Award until 2024 — for an all-round display of try, place-kicking and leadership.

Match context

Leeds Rhinos beat Warrington Wolves 26-18 at Old Trafford to win their sixth Super League title — a rematch of that year's Challenge Cup Final, which Warrington had won 35-18, so Leeds' Grand Final win was framed as revenge. Warrington struck first through Richie Myler inside the opening few minutes, and the teams were level 14-14 at half-time after tries from Sinfield and Ben Jones-Bishop for Leeds and Joel Monaghan and Ryan Atkins for Warrington either side of the break. Leeds took control after half-time, with Carl Ablett's try and a late Ryan Hall score sealing the win. Remarkably, it was the second consecutive season Leeds had won the Grand Final having finished 5th in the regular season, beating Wakefield Trinity, Catalans Dragons, Wigan Warriors and Warrington in successive playoff rounds — in contrast to League Leaders' Shield winners Wigan, who had topped the table by 5 points but were eliminated in the semi-finals after their week 3 "club call" gamble (choosing to play Leeds rather than Warrington) backfired, losing 12-13. Kevin Sinfield's all-round display — a try, five successful conversions and captaincy throughout — earned him the Harry Sunderland Trophy.
