Harry Sunderland Trophy
Rob Burrow (Leeds Rhinos). Burrow won the Harry Sunderland Trophy — Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match award, not renamed the Rob Burrow Award until 2024, in tribute to Burrow himself — reportedly by unanimous vote, making him the award's first two-time winner after also claiming it in 2007.
Match context
Leeds Rhinos beat St Helens 32-16 at Old Trafford in a rematch of the 2009 Grand Final between the same two clubs. St Helens entered as favourites, having finished 3rd in the regular season against Leeds' 5th, but Leeds arrived off the back of the most improbable run in the play-off format's history, winning three straight sudden-death-style matches — over Hull FC, Huddersfield Giants, and League Leaders' Shield winners Warrington Wolves (courtesy of a controversial late charge-down penalty) — to reach Old Trafford. Leeds led 8-2 at half-time and won going away, becoming the first team to win the Super League Grand Final from 5th place, a feat Leeds themselves repeated the following year. Rob Burrow won the Harry Sunderland Trophy, reportedly by unanimous vote — his second win after 2007, making him the award's first two-time winner. Pre-match entertainment was disrupted when rock band Feeder's planned performance was cancelled due to a wet pitch, after Manchester United (the ground's owners) declined permission to build a stage on the playing surface. The winners earned the right to face the NRL champion in the 2012 World Club Challenge at Headingley the following February.
